After Bernard Buffet. New York VIII. First Edition, Mourlot, 1967. Unsigned. Image 21x15cm, sheet size 31x24xm.
Bernard Buffet 1927-1999. French painter whose barren landscapes, harsh still lifes, gaunt religious scenes and sad circus clowns brought him considerable fame. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and had his first solo exhibitions aged 20. A very distinctive style of elongated, spiky forms, somber colors, flattened spaces. Along with Yves Saint Laurent, Brigitte Bardot, Roger Vadim and Francoise Sagan, he was included in a 1958 article in The New York Times Magazine titled ''France's Fabulous Young Five.'' His work is in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville Paris and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. There are also two museums in Japan devoted to his work. Mr. Buffet suffered from Parkinson's disease and when he could no longer work, he tragically took his own life.
These works are from the 1st Edition Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) (after) - New York, printed in November 1967 by Fernand Mourlot. A complete series of 10 lithographs on vellum acropole paper from Renage. Unsigned. They are in excellent condition and have never been framed.
