180230- Bartoli, Pietro Santi. Etchings III & IV from Admirana Romanarum Antiquitatum. 1680. Images, 14.5x17.5cm & 17x14cm.
Pietro Santi Bartoli (1635-1700), Italian engraver and artist. Born in Perugia, Italy. Studied painting but devoted himself entirely to engraving once he finished his studies. He was well travelled though Europe, working for Christina, Queen of Sweden as her archivist and also working extensively for Cardinal Massimo of the Vatican producing records of the frescos adorning the walls of ancient Roman tombs. He had a highly collaborative working relationship with Bellori to ensure that Roman antiquities were preserved in drawing from inscrupulous excavations. the first of these collaborations was a volume of illustrations from the Tomb of Nasonii on the Via Flaminia (1680). This continued until 1706 when his son Francesco took over (see Francsco Bartoli prints). These prints are in excellent condition and in the right setting and with the right frames, will set off any interior.
