Roberto Masi. 1940-2011. Italian artist who lived and worked in Florence. He was an exponent of primitivism, which at its core is the search for or a simpler, more basic way of life, reflected in the form, character and subject matter of the artists depictions. Primitivism has had a profound impact on modern Western art. The discovery of African tribal art by Picasso around 1906 was an important influence on his painting in general, and was a major factor in leading him to cubism.
