He travelled extensively in central and south-america, in Saharan Africa and in the equatorial, in the Middle East, in Southeast Asia, studying the artistic expressions of different ethnic groups.  He lived in New York for two years, where he got to know  Andy Warhol and Bob Rauschemberg.
